EIPA’S Mission

To preserve Edisto Island’s rural and agricultural way of life through community driven growth control and proactive initiatives to preserve its historical and cultural heritage, its ecosystems, and its natural beauty.

EIPA’s 2010 Accomplishments

A.        Collaborating with Allies and Partners:

1. Utilized the ACE Basin Study sponsored by EIPA and funded by the Huffines Foundation to help educate planning officials in Beaufort, Colleton, & Charleston Counties to our water quality concerns and recommended zoning solutions.

2. EIPA, working with EBPOA and the Edisto Island Community Association, has done extensive research into issues surrounding the proposal to bring a water line across Edisto Island.

3. Joined allies including the SC Coastal Conservation League, St. Pauls Preservation Society and others in successfully opposing the Shepard Landfill upstream from Edisto in the ACE Basin.

4. Continued to work with Botany Bay WMA on their volunteer program and to provide information to Edisto visitors publicizing the rules and regulations and the opening and closing schedule of the WMA.

5. Continued to support Edisto Pride’s efforts to achieve a litter-free island.

6. Supported SC DNR in seeking a grant to expand their oyster restoration project to include Bailey Creek, the North Edisto, and other ACE Basin waterways.

7. Continued to support the sand fencing project of the Edisto Beach Property Owners Association.

B.        Educating and Keeping the Community/Public Informed:

8. Published our first membership brochure to use for recruiting and promoting our mission.

9. Received a grant from Charleston County and raised additional funds to purchase underwriting on SCETV Radio to promote our mission statewide.

10. Published via e-mail quarterly member newsletters.

11. www.PreserveEdisto.org continues to serve our membership and the public with updated information about our organization, Botany Bay WMA, the National Scenic Byway and the island and has regularly recorded over 1000 unique visitors per month. 

12. Made a presentation to Clemson Univ. Landscape Architecture class on Lowcountry ecology, regional and local growth issues, and impacts of growth on issues including water.

13. EIPA’s Edisto Island National Scenic Byway Committee (aka the Scenic Byway Committee) placed a “gateway to the Scenic Byway” sign at the foot of the bridge on the mainland side of the Dawhoo River Bridge.

14. EIPA’s Scenic Byway Committee is working with EIOLT to develop a Scenic Byway brochure for use in guiding visitors to Edisto’s scenic, natural, historic, and local vendor attractions.

15. EIPA’s Scenic Byway Committee is working with EIOLT to develop a website to promote the EI National Scenic Byway.

16. Submitted a grant application to MESSA seeking funds to increase our educational programs related to water quality issues.

C.        Community Activism:

17. EIPA, working with the Edisto Island Community Association, co-sponsored two community candidate forums so that island residents could meet the candidates for Charleston County Council.

18. Participated in the Charleston County Green Fair, expanding our reach and networking with other organizations with complimentary visions.

19. Participated in the opening of Big Bay Park and increased our membership.

20. Participated in the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the ACE Basin Task Force.

21. Will participate in the Town of Edisto Beach/Edisto Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas parade.
