Working to Prevent Litter
Edisto Pride is made up of Edisto Island businesses, individuals from
the Community, and governmental agencies who believe litter can
be prevented. Our approach is to educate the public, particularly our
youth, and to instill a sense of community pride in everyone who
lives on or visits our island.

President’s Circle Recognition Award Recipient: On behalf of Keep America Beautiful, thank you for submitting your 2009 Annual Report. The quality and integrity of the entire Keep America Beautiful network of local affiliates is based on community action and accountability. Even though local programs are adapted to meet the particular needs of a community, all programs must meet certain reporting requirements. In addition to completing your Annual Report, you have also fulfilled all accompanying requirements for good standing which include: maintaining an active Board/Advisory Council, attending 6 hours of training in the last twelve months, remaining current with your Network Service Fees and completing your 2009 Semi-Annual Report. Therefore your affiliate is receiving the 2009 President’s Circle Recognition Award. Congratulations! We thank you again for completing your good standing requirements and for taking the time and working so hard to help keep our network strong. Sincerely, |

ATTENTION REALTORS:
PalmettoPride’s Real Estate Awareness program gets anti-litter information into the hands of new home buyers.
Information packets are delivered quarterly to participating groups, to be passed on to home buyers. Information
packets contain a car litter bag, PalmettoPride information brochures, key chains and bumper stickers.
The program raises awareness to new residents of South Carolina about the current litter problem
as well as educates them on how they can help prevent litter and clean it up. The program reminds
clients that you, as their realtor, care about the community where they have just purchased their new home.
Current participants include: Southern Midlands Association of Realtors,
Sumter Board of Realtors, Kershaw County Board of Realtors,
Greater Greenville Board of Realtors, and the Walterboro Board of Realtors.
For more information, or to join in this program’s success, contact Gene Campbell at 877-725-7733

Beach Sweep River Sweep Happened Sept. 19
with tremendous participation. The Wyndham Green Team took "the Point",
dozens of volunteers worked the beach, kayac teams swept creeks and marshes,
and a special clean up took place at Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area.
And everyone had a great lunch at the State Park as we welcomed a new sponsor...

The second grade class at Jane Edwards Elementary made three-dimensional litter
pizza pie charts, which represented the Municipal Solid Waste discarded in the United States;
each slice of the pizza represented a different solid waste category:
Paper/Paperboard 35.7%, Yard Trimmings 12.2%, Food 11.4%, Plastics 11.1%,
Metals 7.9%,
Rubber, Leather & Textiles 7%, Wood 5.7%, Glass 5.5%, Other 3.4%.
Students discussed ways they could help better manage solid waste in schools.
For example: don't waste paper, recycle, start a composting project, think of creative
ways to reuse different products and materials.

Nature Day
May 16, 2009
People from across the island and beach gather twice a year
to help keep our secondary roads and our waterways clean. The first effort,
the Great American Cleanup takes place in the spring and concentrates
on the roadways. For more information go to:

Beach/River Sweep
September 19, 2009
Our second major clean up effort is our Beach and River Sweep. Working with the
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources we go by boat and kayak
into our creeks and marshes and by foot along our beaches. While tons of trash
are collected
we believe the more important goal for these efforts is educational.
We feel the involvement
creates a sense of civic pride. You never quite look at
litter the same way after you've cleaned
up a dozen garbage bags of it!
For more information about beach and river sweep visit SC DNR's web site:

Trash is ugly. Why people throw it out on our beautiful island makes no sense to us.
But
Edisto Pride has helped collect tons of trash and to dispose of it properly.
We're proud to have Edisto Pride as part of the Edisto Island Preservation Alliance.
They're doing their part to keep
Edisto the unspoiled paradise we all love.
