Edisto Island turned out in force to tell OCRM "NO!"
On Thursday, September 18th, Edisto Island drew a line in the creek and said that they would not sit idly
by as developers sought to create deep water access for property that does not qualify. Addressing
two requests, the first for a community dock and two joint use docks on Sand Creek next to
EIOLT preserved property, and the second for a community dock on Bailey Creek, Edisto Island
residents turned out en masse to oppose the applications.
Led by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, the Edisto Island Community Association, and the
Edisto Island Preservation Alliance... backed by the Bailey Island Club, Meggett Point Property
Owners Association, friends from near by islands like Wadamalaw, key island leaders like
Chick Morrison a Past President of EICA and pastor at the New First Baptist Church, and
bolstered by the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League and a letter from
Senator Fritz Hollings the message was loud and clear. Each speaker was greeted by loud and prolonged applause from the assembly.
Speakers cited OCRM and the Army Corp of Engineers own regulations showing the applications
were flawed. Now the waiting game begins as we look to see the effect of this combined community
outpouring of opposition. Stay tuned!
